Local theme parks and extreme rides in China

The Happy Valley chain (欢乐谷) pioneered modern theme parks in China and targets adrenaline lovers. Parks sit in major cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen. Unlike classic fairy-tale parks, the focus here is massive roller coasters and extreme attractions.

Shanghai's park features Asia's first wooden coaster; Shenzhen adds the popular Maya water park. Standard adult tickets run 230–299 yuan depending on season and city. Most parks open at 09:00 and close at 22:00, with evening shows and costume parades after main rides shut down.

Fantawild Adventuretargets families, blending cutting-edge tech, visual shows, and traditional Chinese mythology. Parks operate in Zhengzhou, Shenyang, Zhuzhou, Qingdao, and other cities. Despite the family positioning, thrill seekers still get their fix: extreme coasters include the famous Storm Eye (暴风眼) with inversions. Average adult tickets cost around 280 yuan; gates usually open 10:00–21:30.

You can buy at the gate, but expect long lines and sell-outs on peak days. The easiest method is mini programs inside Alipay and WeChat.

Method 1: Alipay (recommended)

Alipay is the most foreigner-friendly option: built-in page translation and support for Visa/Mastercard.

1. Verify your Alipay account with your passport (KYC) and link a bank card.
2. Search for the park name in English or Chinese (e.g. Happy Valley Shenzhen or 深圳欢乐谷).
3. Select the official park mini-program. Use Translate if the UI is in Chinese.
4. Pick date and ticket type; set ID Type to Passport (护照).
5. Enter your name exactly as in the passport MRZ. Pay by card — the QR code saves in-app, but staff may still ask for the physical passport at entry.

Method 2: WeChat

WeChat also sells tickets, but some park mini-programs require a Chinese phone number to register.

1. Open Discover → Mini Programs.
2. Search the park name (Chinese characters copied from maps work best).
3. Look for calendar icons or the label 门票 (tickets).
4. Fill in passport details and pay via WeChat Pay.
