History and architecture: Calatrava’s showcase
From the diverted Turia to a modern Spanish icon
After the catastrophic 1957 flood, the Turia was diverted and the old riverbed became a park. At its eastern end rose Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias — a futuristic ensemble where Calatrava’s white concrete and glass sit beside Valencia’s gothic core as equal city symbols.
Light, water and concrete
Forms shift with the light: cool lines at morning, a lit “midnight walk” along the pools at night. Even without tickets, the outdoor plazas stay open for walking and photos.
Inside: main Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias venues
L'Hemisfèric — the eye planetarium
The eye-shaped building hosts planetarium and IMAX/fulldome shows. One ticket usually equals one session — check showtimes when buying on tickets.cac.es / cac.es.
Prince Felipe Science Museum
Interactive Museu de les Ciències: single tickets from about €8.90 adult / €6.90 reduced (mid-season). Easy 1.5–2 hours. Ticket offices close one hour before closing.
L'Oceanogràfic — Europe’s aquarium
Europe’s largest aquarium: sharks, belugas, penguins, tunnels. General tickets often ~€37–43 by season/date; ages 4–12 reduced; under-4s free with ID. Box office closes one hour early. Buy on oceanografic.org — not from street resellers.
L'Àgora and Palau de les Arts
Àgora is a multi-use hall; Palau hosts opera. Without a show, the exterior walk and bridges are enough.

Getting there and planning from central Valencia
Walk through Turia Gardens
From the old town along the green riverbed: a pleasant 30–45 minutes with a stroller. Morning Central Market, evening lights outside the pavilions.
Metro Alameda and buses
Metro Alameda (L3/L5) plus a 10–15 minute walk. From the airport: metro/taxi to the centre, then the same corridor. Families: see Valencia with kids; nature day: Albufera. Stay online with an eSIM.

Compared with Madrid, Catalonia and Berlin
Madrid wins on Prado-scale collections; Catalonia and Barcelona on Gaudí density. Valencia offers rare modern ensemble scale by water — closer to big urban gestures than a classic gallery day. For food after concrete, read paella in Valencia.

FAQ
How long do you need at the City of Arts and Sciences?
Outdoor photos: 1–2 hours. Oceanogràfic alone needs 3–4 hours; the full complex with museum and Hemisfèric easily takes 6–8 hours or two visits.
What do tickets cost in 2026?
Mid-season guide: Museu/Hemisfèric singles from ~€8.90 adult; Oceanogràfic general often ~€37–43 by date; triple combo ~€45–51. Check cac.es and oceanografic.org for your day. We do not sell official tickets as affiliate offers.
How do I get there from the centre?
Walk 30–45 minutes through Turia Gardens, or metro Alameda (L3/L5) plus a short stroll. EMT buses 13/35 also serve the complex — verify on emtvalencia.es.
Is a combo ticket worth it?
If you want Oceanogràfic plus museum and a Hemisfèric show, combos usually beat singles. For one venue, buy single. Under-4s are often free with ID.
Where should I eat nearby?
Cafés exist on site, but real paella is better in town or at Albufera. Morning Central Market works well before pavilion opening.
