What Tokyo Game Show is — and why 2026 matters
TGS is the annual Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA) show at Makuhari Messe. Expect new releases, playable demos, indie corners, hardware, stages and a cosplay area. For travellers it is a full exhibition day, not a quiet museum visit.
The 30th-anniversary edition runs five days — longer than usual. The first two days target business and press; tourists need the public days on September 19–21. Family Game Park sits in neighbouring TKP Tokyo Bay Makuhari Hall, so plan the extra walk.
If TGS is only one piece of the trip, keep buffer days for Tokyo itself: Akihabara, teamLab, cafés and shopping. Even experienced visitors rarely finish the halls in a rush.

One-Day Ticket — ¥3,000
One chosen public day for junior-high students and older. Elementary-school children and younger enter free under organiser rules. The simplest choice for most travellers.
Fast Ticket — ¥6,000
Priority entry plus benefits. Usually name-bound with ID checks and strict change/refund rules. Worth it if early demo access matters.
Premium Ticket — ¥30,000
All three public days with Fast-style perks and lounge access. One per person, strict name and ID rules.

Main venue address: 2-1 Nakase, Mihama-ku, Chiba City. Best rail stop: Kaihin-Makuhari on the JR Keiyo Line — about a 5-minute walk to Makuhari Messe and roughly 30 minutes by rapid train from central Tokyo.
The complex is large: Exhibition Halls 1–11 and the International Conference Hall. Family Game Park is at TKP Tokyo Bay Makuhari Hall (2-3 Hibino), about a 10-minute walk from the same station. Do not treat this as a quick one-hour stop.
On show days stations and walkways jam. Leave earlier than you think you need; keep an offline map and a meetup point away from the densest entrance crowd.
Where to stay: Tokyo vs near Makuhari
A Tokyo base (Shibuya, Shinjuku, Tokyo Station, Ueno) works better for the rest of the trip: evenings in the city, mornings on the Keiyo Line to TGS.
Sleeping near Kaihin-Makuhari reduces show-morning stress but gives you less evening Tokyo. For one or two TGS days inside a longer Japan trip, central Tokyo usually wins.

A practical TGS day plan
Morning
Leave Tokyo with buffer time. Have QR tickets ready, power bank charged, and hit priority demos first before free roaming.
Midday
Rotate booths with short breaks — demo queues run long. On-site food is slower and pricier; a packed snack helps.
Evening
Do not leave merch for the final hour. Return trains at peak are packed — keep margin before dinner or shopping in Tokyo.
Cosplay and some zones may need advance registration and fees. Rules are released in stages — recheck the official site closer to your dates.
Combine TGS with a Tokyo trip
Minimum: one TGS day plus two or three city days. Best balance: a Saturday or Sunday public day, then weekdays for museums and quieter neighbourhoods.
The show pairs well with Akihabara, anime pilgrimage spots and digital installations. Do not stack a full Makuhari day with a packed Shinjuku night on the same date.
