Only 长白山天池
In this guide “Tianchi” means Changbaishan Heaven Lake (长白山天池) in Jilin—a border crater lake. Not Xinjiang Tianchi and not city parks with the same name. Search 长白山 / Changbaishan / Erdaobaihe on maps.
Base: Erdaobaihe / Yanji
For the North Slope, overnight in 二道白河 near 长白山站 and transfer hubs. From Yanji a day is possible with a very early start and road buffer. The West Slope uses a different station (长白山西站)—do not mix tickets.
North Slope day
- Entry ticket + compulsory eco-bus inside + summit vehicle to Tianchi viewpoints.
- Prices and hours follow seasonal official boards—old screenshots are not a contract.
- Morning gives better odds of a clear lake; afternoon cloud is common.
- Waterfall, hot springs and forest trails are same-ticket bonuses if light remains.
Weather and season
Best visibility is usually in the warm season; winter snow is striking but the summit closes often for wind/fog. The rim feels far colder than the valley—a July wind shell is normal, not overkill.
Altitude and kit
Lake ~2,189 m, viewpoints higher. Walk slowly, drink water, protect knees on stairs. The DPRK border runs across the water—no drones, no shooting past markers. Keep an eSIM for China for forecasts and shuttle info.
Rail hubs
Northeast hubs (Shenyang, Harbin) feed Jilin by high-speed rail—see the China HSR guide. A different high-altitude brief with its own paperwork: Tibet Travel Permit.
Protect the morning for Tianchi
The wizard helps you avoid gluing the crater to a late transfer—fog will not wait for your scheduled shot.
FAQ
Which Tianchi is this?
Only 长白山天池—Changbai Mountain’s crater lake on the Jilin / DPRK border. Other lakes also called Tianchi (Xinjiang, city parks, etc.) are different places. Write Changbaishan / 长白山 in the brief.
Is a day trip from Erdaobaihe or Yanji realistic?
Yes as a long day: basing in 二道白河 (Erdaobaihe) for the North Slope is cleaner; from Yanji start very early and buffer the transfer. Park tickets, eco-bus and summit vehicle follow seasonal rules; fog often hides the lake.
When is visibility better?
Warm season (often July–September) with best odds in the morning. Winter wind and fog close the summit without notice. The crater rim feels far colder than town—bring a wind shell even in July.
How high is it?
Lake surface about 2,189 m; North Slope viewpoints sit higher. Walk slowly, drink water, do not sprint the stairs. If altitude hits hard, descend and follow park staff.
