The short answer
For a first Georgia road trip, spend 7 days on Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti. With 10 days, continue through Borjomi to Kutaisi. Choose the 14-day route only if Svaneti is a priority: the drive to Mestia takes most of a day in each direction.
A normal car is enough for the main paved route in suitable weather. Do not rent a 4x4 just for its badge: first check whether the contract permits remote roads such as Ushguli or Tusheti.

Georgia is compact on a map, but mountain bends, trucks, village traffic and photo stops reduce your average speed. Choose the route by time available rather than by the number of pins you can fit into a map.

7-day Georgia road trip: Kazbegi and Kakheti
This is the best first road trip if you want variety without spending every day behind the wheel. Keep the rental for days 2–7 and explore central Tbilisi without a car.
Day 1
Tbilisi
Walk the Old Town, Sololaki and Rustaveli Avenue. Choose a hotel with parking only if you collect the car today.
Day 2
Tbilisi → Mtskheta → Ananuri → Stepantsminda
Pick up the car early. Stop in Mtskheta, at Zhinvali Reservoir and Ananuri, then cross the Gudauri section in daylight.
Day 3
Stepantsminda
Visit Gergeti Trinity Church and choose one short valley walk. Keep this day flexible in case clouds or road restrictions delay arrival.
Day 4
Stepantsminda → Tbilisi
Return on the same road, using the morning for viewpoints missed on day 2. Do not schedule an evening flight after this drive.
Day 5
Tbilisi → Sighnaghi → Telavi
Drive into Kakheti via Sighnaghi and Bodbe. Stay in Telavi or at a winery with on-site parking.
Day 6
Kakheti
Explore Telavi, Tsinandali and nearby wineries. Appoint a non-drinking driver or book a driver for tastings.
Day 7
Telavi → Gombori Pass → Tbilisi
Return via Gombori in daylight. Add buffer before returning the car, especially during Tbilisi rush hour.
10-day Georgia road trip: add Borjomi and Kutaisi
Use the first six days of the route above, then continue west. This version works especially well with an open-jaw flight: arrive in Tbilisi and leave from Kutaisi.
Days 1–6
Tbilisi, Kazbegi and Kakheti
Follow days 1–6 above, with two nights in Stepantsminda and two nights in Kakheti.
Day 7
Telavi → Tbilisi → Gori → Borjomi
This is a long transfer day. Break it at Gori or Uplistsikhe and reach Borjomi before dark.
Day 8
Borjomi
Take a no-driving or low-driving day for the park and a short hike. Add Akhaltsikhe only if you are comfortable with another 100+ km return trip.
Day 9
Borjomi → Kutaisi
Drive to Kutaisi, check in, then visit the center and Bagrati Cathedral. Avoid stacking distant canyon stops onto this transfer.
Day 10
Kutaisi and Imereti
Choose one day trip: Gelati and Motsameta, Prometheus Cave, or Okatse Canyon. Return the car in Kutaisi.
14-day Georgia road trip: continue to Svaneti
Fourteen days make Mestia realistic, but not effortless. The Kutaisi–Mestia drive is a full travel day, and Ushguli should depend on weather, road status and your rental contract.
Days 1–9
Tbilisi → Kazbegi → Kakheti → Borjomi → Kutaisi
Follow the 10-day route at a relaxed pace, reaching Kutaisi on day 9.

Kutaisi
Keep a recovery and sightseeing day before the long mountain transfer.
Day 11
Kutaisi → Zugdidi → Mestia
Leave early, refuel in Zugdidi and expect six to seven hours before sightseeing stops. Complete the mountain section in daylight.
Day 12
Mestia
Visit the Svaneti museum, towers and a nearby viewpoint. This also acts as a weather buffer.
Day 13
Ushguli day trip or Mestia valley day
Use a local 4x4 driver if your rental contract excludes Ushguli. If the road is poor, stay near Mestia instead.
Day 14
Mestia → Kutaisi
Return to Kutaisi and stay overnight. Book your flight for the following day rather than relying on a same-day mountain transfer.

These are planning estimates, not promises. Times exclude sightseeing and can change with weather, construction and traffic. Add at least 20% on mountain days and avoid using an estimated arrival time as a flight connection.

Before any mountain drive, check the Roads Department of Georgia. Its restrictions can change during the day because of snow, avalanche danger, rockfall or maintenance.
Renting a car in Georgia: what actually matters
Compare the contract, not only the daily rate. A cheap rental can become expensive if it has a large damage excess, weak roadside support or exclusions covering the exact roads you plan to drive.
Documents
Bring your original driving licence, passport and the payment card required by the rental company. Ask the company in writing whether your licence needs an International Driving Permit or translation; requirements depend on the licence format and supplier.
Insurance
Check the excess, glass and tyre cover, underbody damage, roadside assistance and rules for unpaved roads. Photograph every side of the car, wheels, windscreen and fuel gauge at collection and return.
Vehicle choice
A compact car is easier to park and adequate for the paved itinerary in good weather. A crossover adds clearance and comfort, but all-wheel drive does not compensate for unsuitable tyres or poor mountain-driving skills.
One-way rental
Ask about collecting in Tbilisi and returning in Kutaisi or Batumi. The fee may be worthwhile because it removes a full return-drive day from a 10 or 14-day itinerary.
Before paying, ask these five questions:
- Are Kazbegi, Mestia and Ushguli permitted by this contract?
- What is the insurance excess, and which damage is excluded?
- Are the tyres suitable for the season and mountain route?
- Is unlimited mileage included?

Kazbegi, Svaneti and roads that need extra planning
Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi
The road through Ananuri, Gudauri and the Cross Pass is paved. Its main risks are fast-changing weather, queues of heavy vehicles, overtaking and temporary restrictions around Gudauri–Kobi. Drive in daylight and check the official status both before leaving and before returning.
Mestia and Ushguli
The conventional route from Zugdidi to Mestia is paved but long, narrow and tiring. The onward road to Ushguli is more variable. Even if a vehicle can physically drive it, your rental agreement may exclude it. A local driver is often the safer and contract-compliant option.
Tusheti and remote valleys
Do not add Tusheti as a casual detour. The Abano Pass is a specialist seasonal mountain road, often excluded from standard rentals. Visit with an experienced local driver and allow for closure or cancellation.
If the rental contract excludes a mountain road, compare a guided Kazbegi, Svaneti or 4x4 day trip instead of risking the vehicle and your insurance cover.
Fuel, parking, navigation and daily driving
- Delay the rental in Tbilisi. Explore the capital on foot, by metro and taxi, then collect the car on departure day.
- Refuel before mountain legs. Use major towns such as Tbilisi, Telavi, Kutaisi or Zugdidi rather than relying on a remote station being open.
