Carmel Art Association — the historic heart of town

The Carmel Art Association is the oldest continuously operating gallery in Carmel and one of the oldest nonprofit art cooperatives in the United States. It was founded on August 8, 1927 by 19 pioneer artists seeking a permanent place to share craft and show work. Today it represents more than 80 active professional painters, sculptors, and printmakers.

In the 1940s the Monterey Peninsula drew many famous creatives; surrealist Salvador Dalí was an active association member and even helped judge California school exhibitions. The gallery welcomes more than 16,000 visitors a year and is open to tourists seven days a week, 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
