A four-day frame
The goal is not to rewrite the Cascade or Garni — it is to assemble a festive week: city evenings, one day trip, and one spare day.
Compare flights into EVN, book a central hotel for 30 Dec–2 Jan peak, set up an eSIM / Yesim, and add travel insurance before you fly.
Day-by-day (link, don’t rewrite)
- Day 1 — square in the morning, Cascade afternoon. Republic Square (tree and lights) in the morning, then the Cascade after lunch; dinner around Saryan or Amiryan. With kids, pull anchors from the Yerevan with kids itinerary.
- Day 2 — Garni and Geghard. Leave by 09:00, back by 16:00; late-December dusk is around 17:30. Route details in the Garni & Geghard guide.
- Day 3 — Ararat or Matenadaran. Morning tasting at the Ararat brandy factory or Matenadaran—not both if you want a calm day.
- Day 4 — Tsakhkadzor or departure. Tsakhkadzor only if snow is the goal (out early, back before dark); otherwise a slow morning and the airport—see the subsection below.
Need your own day order around flight times and a 31 December table booking?
Build itineraryRequired day out: Garni and Geghard
Without a day trip the week feels like “only the square.” The default outing is Garni Temple + Geghard Monastery with a driver or an organised excursion: leave by 09:00, back by 16:00. We do not duplicate tickets and stop order here; follow the Garni & Geghard from Yerevan guide.
Optional: Tsakhkadzor as a snow day
Tsakhkadzor (~1–1.5 hours in good road conditions) is a subsection for travellers who want snow and lifts more than another museum. Swap it onto day 4 only when the forecast and transfer are clear—leave early and return before dark; in ice, keep a slow morning and head to the airport.
31 December dinner and midnight
New Year is Armenia’s main secular celebration: central tables book early and set menus cost more than a normal dinner. Reserve weeks ahead; for a public format, Republic Square toward midnight (concert / fireworks in typical years — confirm the city programme closer to the date). Dress for long standing cold.
1–2 January many museums and offices close or run short hours — do not pin your only museum day there without a backup plan.
Weather and taxis
City winter is roughly −2…+6 °C, with ice on the Cascade steps. Tsakhkadzor runs noticeably colder and windier.
In town use GG Taxi / Yandex apps. For Garni or Tsakhkadzor, lock winter tyres and a price before you ride. On foot on 31 December leave slack — roads close and taxis often cannot stop at the tree itself.

FAQ
How many days do I need for Yerevan winter holidays?
Four full days is a workable minimum: city evenings, the Cascade, a required day trip (Garni–Geghard), and a buffer for 31 December dinner or museums. A fifth day helps if you want Tsakhkadzor for snow.
Which day trip is required?
This guide treats Garni Temple + Geghard Monastery as the required out-of-city day. Check winter roads and daylight; we do not rewrite the full day-trip guide here — follow the dedicated article.
How do taxis work in winter?
In the city, GG Taxi / Yandex apps are the easy default. For mountain roads or Tsakhkadzor, confirm winter tyres and a fixed transfer price in advance — do not flag a random car at Republic Square at peak hour.
Where should I eat on 31 December?
Central restaurants book out weeks ahead with prepaid set menus. Alternative: midnight gathering on Republic Square (dress for standing cold), then a late bite near Northern Avenue if kitchens are still open.
What is the late-December weather like?
Roughly −2…+6 °C in the city, colder at night; snow and icy Cascade steps are possible. Layers, grippy shoes, gloves. The mountains (Tsakhkadzor) run noticeably colder.
Is Tsakhkadzor worth it?
Only as an optional snow day instead of a calm city buffer — if you have energy, a transfer, and a clear forecast. Leave early and be back before dark.
