Budget New Year in Uzbekistan: Tashkent + Samarkand

If you want New Year in dry air with minarets and Registan—not a beach or ski resort—a 5–6 night loop (Tashkent + Samarkand) usually beats Western Europe on cost when hotels and Afrosiyob seats are booked early.

Why spend New Year here

Late December in Uzbekistan is cool but usually milder than a Caucasus freeze: less reliable city snow, more fog and short daylight. It stays a budget Central Asia hub if you lock hotels early and refuse a three-city sprint in four nights.

Documents, registration, and the overall trip skeleton live only in the Uzbekistan 2026 documents & cities guide— we do not repeat them here. Autumn pacing and Afrosiyob tips sit in the Uzbekistan in autumn guide.

Compare flights into Tashkent (TAS), book a hotel for peak nights, set up a local eSIM / Yesim, and add travel insurance before departure — clinics and connectivity behave differently over the holiday peak.

Day split: Tashkent + Samarkand

Baseline for 5–6 nights: two nights Tashkent (arrival, metro, Old City / centre) → morning Afrosiyob → two–three nights Samarkand (Registan at dusk, Shah-i-Zinda, Siab bazaar). Put 31 December in the city where you already sleep — no evening train hop.

Need a calendar with a 1 January buffer and Afrosiyob seats — not a copy-paste tour?

Budget: order of magnitude

Order-of-magnitude prices for autumn 2026, not a price list — over New Year week, hotels and set dinners rise faster than a normal teahouse meal; lock lodging and Afrosiyob early.

What is open on 31 December and 1 January

1 January is a public holiday: banks and government offices close; many museums and ticket desks shut or run short hours. Exterior monument loops usually stay walkable — move paid interiors to 2–3 January when you can.

On 31 December restaurants often run prepaid set menus — reserve early. Bazaars may close earlier in the evening; buy water and snacks by afternoon. Confirm Registan desks, metro, and venue hours closer to your dates — holiday calendars shift each year.

Late-December weather and visas

Expect roughly 0…+10 °C by day in Tashkent and Samarkand, near freezing at night, with fog common. Layers, a hat, waterproof shoes, and gloves for evening squares are non-negotiable.

Russian citizens enter visa-free. Check the current permitted stay and registration rules on the live MFA Uzbekistan page when you book. Other nationalities: follow the visa-free / e-Visa list on MFA Uzbekistan.

Optional Bukhara

Add Bukhara only if you still have at least one full night after Samarkand (two is kinder). A three-city holiday sprint burns evenings. If Bukhara does not fit the window, keep Samarkand longer or save Bukhara for another trip.

Practical fallback: a day excursion from your base if you do not want to stitch trains yourself in peak week.

Where should I spend New Year’s Eve — Tashkent or Samarkand?

Tashkent offers more restaurant choice and city buzz; Samarkand feels quieter and closer to the monuments. Spend 31 December in the city where you already sleep that night — do not plan an evening Afrosiyob move.
