History and architecture: why the Giralda stands out

Almohad base, Christian crown

The lower shaft is a 12th-century minaret; upper tiers and the El Giraldillo weathervane came after the Reconquista. With the cathedral and Archivo de Indias it forms a UNESCO ensemble. Height ~104 m; the top platform looks over Santa Cruz and the river.

Why ramps, not stairs

Thirty-five gentle ramps once let a rider reach the bells. For visitors that means a long but even climb — water and a hat in summer. Patio de los Naranjos is part of the cultural visit: a shaded pause before or after the tower.

Planning the cathedral and Giralda visit

Tickets, hours, best slot

Address: Avenida de la Constitución, s/n. Tram T1 and metro Puerta de Jerez are closest. Outside summer exceptions: roughly Mon–Sat 11:00–18:00 (Giralda access closes earlier), Sundays from ~14:30. Summer 2026 published special windows for bell-tower works — always check the day’s calendar.

Climbing the viewpoint

Cultural visits often start at Giralda access control — capacity is limited. Photograph the city, not only the railing. In heat, take the first morning slot.

Centre route: Giralda to Alcázar

  1. Plaza del Triunfo — cathedral / Giralda entry.
  2. Archivo de Indias façade pause.
  3. Real Alcázar — book a separate timed ticket early.
  4. Santa Cruz lanes toward evening flamenco.

Ready 2-day plans: first time, couples, with kids. Next: Toledo from Madrid, Prado tickets, Spain without crowds.

FAQ

Is the Giralda and cathedral one ticket?

Yes. The cultural visit covers the Cathedral and Giralda tower (and usually Patio de los Naranjos). There is no separate everyday “tower-only” ticket — you enter on a cathedral timed slot.

What does entry cost in 2026?

From 1 January 2026: general €13 online / €14 at the desk; reduced €7 / €8. Free categories and Sunday windows follow chapter rules with ID. Official site: catedraldesevilla.es.

Is there a lift or stairs?

No lift. Instead of stairs you climb 35 gentle ramps (~104 m tower height). It is tiring in heat; visitors with limited mobility should plan the lower levels / courtyard only.

How long should I allow?

Official estimate for cathedral + Giralda is about 75 minutes. A calm pace with photos: ~45 minutes on the tower plus up to 1.5 hours for the naves and courtyard.

Best exterior photo spot?

Morning on Plaza Virgen de los Reyes or hotel terraces by Plaza del Triunfo. Summer 2026 may shift hours for bell-tower works — check cathedral announcements for your date.
