How to get from Naples to Pompeii

Circumvesuviana (most popular)

At Napoli Centrale, go downstairs to Garibaldi Circumvesuviana / EAV platforms (Napoli–Sorrento line). Alight at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, not the modern town. Ride time ~35–40 minutes; fare about €3.30 in 2026. Buy at the desk/kiosk or use Tap&Go / the EAV app — Naples urban TIC tickets are not valid here.

Trenitalia regional

Surface platforms at Napoli Centrale to Pompei FS (~€2.90–3.30, ~30–40 min). Calmer carriages, but add a 20–25 minute walk to the park. Campania Express (~€6, fewer stops) is seasonal — confirm with EAV; service can be suspended outside peak windows.

Bus and organised transfer

Useful with luggage or kids. Compare buses and transfers or book a guided Naples–Pompeii excursion if you prefer not to decode EAV alone.

Driving the A3

A3/E45 to Pompei exits takes 25–40 minutes without traffic. Paid lots sit near the gates; arrive at opening in summer. Keep an offline map and an eSIM — modern-town streets confuse GPS.

Main gates: Porta Marina (closest to Scavi), Piazza Anfiteatro, Piazza Esedra. Park calendar usually closes 1 January and 25 December (other dates only if announced). Pack shoes, water, SPF, hat, offline map — shade is scarce. Residents fled with little more than Omnia mea mecum porto; you still need hydration.

  1. 09:00 — leave Garibaldi.
  2. 10:00 — enter Porta Marina.
  3. 10:00–14:00 — forum, houses, amphitheatre, Villa of the Mysteries if covered.
  4. 14:30 — lunch near the station or in modern Pompei.
  5. 16:00 — return to Naples or a short Vesuvius add-on.

What to see in four hours

  • Forum and Temple of Jupiter — axis of the city with Vesuvius beyond.
  • House of the Faun and Cave Canem mosaic — the famous watchdog floor.
  • Baths and bakeries — daily life before 79 CE.
  • Amphitheatre — Pink Floyd filmed Live at Pompeii here.
  • Villa of the Mysteries — initiation frescoes (villas ticket / shuttle).

Skip “seeing everything.” Pick five or six stops. With kids, shorten the loop — see Naples with kids.

Want a timed Naples + Pompeii day for your dates?

Food break: Neapolitan sauce and local plates

Cafés cluster by Scavi; in modern Pompei look for trattorie serving ragù / Neapolitan sauce with pasta. Back in Naples, close the day with classic pizza — Naples pizza guide and where to eat in Naples.

Nearby: Vesuvius, Herculaneum, and Capri

Herculaneum is closer and more compact; Vesuvius needs a separate transfer. Positano is too far after four hours on stone. For a sea day, read Capri from Naples. Ready 2-day frames: first visit, for couples, with kids.

Base near Garibaldi or the waterfront via Naples hotels. Pack travel insurance for heat and long walks.

FAQ

Which station do I need: Pompei Scavi or Pompei?

For the ruins, ride the Circumvesuviana (Napoli–Sorrento) to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri — Porta Marina is a short walk. Trenitalia’s Pompei station serves the modern town; budget another 20–25 minutes to the park.

How much is Pompeii admission in 2026?

Orientation from 12 January 2026: about €20 for the ancient city only; about €25 with suburban villas and shuttle; Pompeii Plus (3 days, multiple sites) about €30. EU visitors aged 18–24 pay €2 with ID. Always verify on the official Pompeii Sites page — we do not sell park tickets via affiliate checkouts.

Is one day from Naples enough?

Yes for a focused loop: forum, frescoed houses, amphitheatre, and Villa dei Mysteries if your ticket covers it. Leave Naples around 09:00 and keep 4–5 hours inside.

Is Pompeii named after Pompey the Great?

No. Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus was a Roman general; the town name is older and Oscan in origin. The search confusion is common but unrelated to your day-trip logistics.

Can I add Vesuvius the same day?

Only with an early start and a short park route. Heat and trailer queues often eat the afternoon. Capri or Herculaneum usually deserve their own day.
