Getting from Naples to Capri: ports and ferries

Molo Beverello vs Calata Porta di Massa

Molo Beverello (by Castel Nuovo / Piazza Municipio) handles fast boats. Calata Porta di Massa handles Caremar car-capable ferries and cheaper foot sailings. A free shuttle links the terminals. Metro Line 1 to Municipio. For early departures, stay near the port — compare hotels by the harbour.

NLG, SNAV, Caremar, Alilauro

NLG and SNAV hydrofoils take ~45–50 minutes from Beverello. Caremar’s conventional ferry needs ~80–90 minutes from Porta di Massa. Alilauro appears on seasonal timetables. Buy on operator sites or desks; summer mornings sell out. Prefer a bundled day? Browse a Capri excursion.

A realistic Capri day

Marina Grande and the Blue Grotto

From the pier, ride the funicular to the Piazzetta or decide on the grotto first. The Blue Grotto opens only in calm seas (summer orientation 08:30–18:00 per CoopCulture; shorter in winter). Queues can eat 1–2 hours. Editorial rule: if it is closed or jammed by 10:00, pivot to Anacapri — the island is bigger than one cave.

Anacapri and Monte Solaro

Orange bus or chairlift to Monte Solaro. Villa San Michele and Anacapri lanes feel closer to quiet Campania cinema than Piazzetta boutiques — and lunch is saner.

Gardens of Augustus and Faraglioni

Gardens of Augustus plus the Via Krupp viewpoint close the photo loop. Day top five: Marina Grande → funicular → Anacapri / Solaro → lunch → Gardens of Augustus → return boat.

  1. 08:30 — depart Beverello.
  2. 09:30 — funicular / grotto decision.
  3. 10:30 — Anacapri and San Michele.
  4. 13:00 — lunch with a view (local lemon granita beats packaged juice).
  5. 15:00 — Gardens of Augustus and Faraglioni.
  6. 18:00 — return sailing (book ahead in peak season).

Best season

May–June and September balance light and queues. July–August bring heat, prices, and full boats. Winter seas often close the grotto and thin schedules. Carry an eSIM and travel insurance for cancellations.

What else to pair

Archaeology day: Pompeii from Naples. Evening in town: Naples pizza and where to eat. With kids the island is hot and queued — see Naples with kids. Polignano a Mare’s cliffs are another region — do not force them into the same day. Ready frames: first visit, couples, with kids.

FAQ

Beverello or Porta di Massa?

Hydrofoils (NLG, SNAV, and similar) leave from Molo Beverello by Piazza Municipio. Conventional Caremar ferries use Calata Porta di Massa (~10–15 minutes on foot or free shuttle). Metro Line 1, Municipio station.

How much is the Capri boat in 2026?

Guide: hydrofoil about €23–31 one way plus landing contribution (€5 April–October, €2.50 November–March). Slow ferries start lower (~€14–22) but take 80–90 minutes. Always check the operator for your date.

Is the Blue Grotto worth a day-trip slot?

Only in calm seas with an early arrival. CoopCulture entry is about €6 plus ~€12 for the rowboat (~€18–19 cash at the grotto); Marina Grande transfers add ~€24–25. Rough water closes the cave — keep Anacapri / Faraglioni as plan B.

How do I avoid island taxi prices?

The funicular Marina Grande → Piazzetta and orange Capri–Anacapri buses cover most of a realistic day. Convertible taxis look great in photos and wreck the budget.

I get seasick — what should I book?

Choose the conventional ferry, sit midship, eat light, and bring medication. Storms cancel sailings — keep a buffer day in Naples.
