Jardin Majorelle Marrakech: tickets, timing, and visit tips

Painter Jacques Majorelle laid out the garden in the 1920s and 30s, collecting plants from five continents and coating walls in a vivid ultramarine that later became known as Majorelle Blue. After his death the plot faded until Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought it in 1980 and restored it.

For visitors it is a compact surreal break from the medina: bold architecture against cactus and palms, a few kilometres from the souk noise. YSL is not branding fluff — part of the designer's ashes rest in the on-site memorial, and his namesake museum sits across the street.

Why the colour reads instantly

• blue pavilion and lotus pool — the classic axis for photos;
• yellow accents on doors and pots punch up the contrast;
• light shifts fast: mornings are cooler with softer wall shadows.

The footprint is small but dense: cactus corridors, bamboo, water channels, and shaded corners to pause. Skip the 20-minute sprint — walk clockwise from the entrance, linger at the pool and under the palms. Kids love the “cactus forest” scale; adults appreciate the quiet after the souks.

Garden tickets often include the Berber Museum in Majorelle's former studio — costumes, jewellery, and daily life from Middle and High Atlas communities. It is short, air-conditioned, and worth the detour in heat.

The blue pavilion is a bottleneck — do not block paths for minutes; take turns. Drones and commercial shoots need permission. Best light: first slot and golden hour before closing; midday throws hard shadows on Majorelle Blue.
