Chongqing Yangtze River Cableway: tickets, stations and queues

The Yangtze River Cableway (长江索道) is Chongqing’s classic river crossing by gondola: skyline, brown water, and bridges in one short hop. This 2026 guide covers stations, official tickets (no affiliate), queues, Alipay, and how to fold the ride into a day with Liziba. Hours and fares were spot-checked on 27 October 2026—reconfirm on-site boards before you queue.

What the Yangtze cableway is

长江索道 is an urban aerial tramway across the Yangtze—more practical transport history than a mountain funicular, even though English guides sometimes say “cable car” or “cableway.” The ride is short; the value is the mid-river view of layered Chongqing towers and bridges.

Arrive by metro or DiDi rather than assuming a flat riverside walk. For long-distance arrival into Chongqing, see the China high-speed train guide.

Stations and which side to start

Terminals sit on opposite banks (Yuzhong / peninsula side and Nan’an side). Maps label them under 长江索道 plus the local station names—follow the red gondola icons and bilingual pedestrian signs from the nearest metro exit.

  • Pick the side with the shorter published queue if boards are visible from the street.
  • One-way tickets are enough for most tourists; round-trip only if you want the same return without rejoining a long line.
  • Luggage-heavy travellers should travel light—cabins are shared and standing room is tight at peak.

Sleeping near the peninsula metro grid keeps morning transfers short—compare Chongqing hotels with Line access before you lock the cableway day.

Official tickets only

Purchase tickets at the official cableway counters or the operator’s current official online flow. Skip random street sellers and third-party “skip the line” pitches that cannot show a clear operator receipt. We intentionally do not attach an affiliate link to this attraction: fares and timed slots change, and you should pay the posted official price.

  • Keep the ticket stub or QR until you exit the far station.
  • Child / senior concessions follow posted local ID rules—ask staff before paying full fare twice.
  • If online booking fails for a foreign passport, the counter queue is the reliable fallback.

Queues, timing and Alipay

Arrive early on weekends and Chinese holidays. Off-peak weekdays are kinder. Use Alipay at the official window when QR is offered; have a backup card ready. A working China eSIM helps you refresh maps while you wait without hunting café Wi‑Fi.

  • Heat and humidity build in summer queues—carry water.
  • Service can pause for weather or maintenance; check the entrance notice board.
  • Photography lines form at cabin doors—step aside after your shot so boarding stays safe.

Photo tips in the gondola

Clean the cabin window before you raise the phone if haze allows. Shoot both riverbanks: one side is denser towers, the other opens toward bridges. Avoid flash against glass; continuous video captures the full crossing better than a single still.

Same-day plan with Liziba

A popular loop is cableway in the morning, then metro/DiDi to Liziba (李子坝) on Line 2 for the train-through-building shot—or Liziba first if you want softer light later on the river. Full station logistics are in the Liziba station guide.

Do not schedule both at rush hour; Chongqing transfers eat buffers faster than flat cities.

Build the day around your pace

Drop the cableway, Liziba, and your hotel metro stop into one itinerary so queues and hill walks stay honest.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Chongqing Yangtze River Cableway called in Chinese?

长江索道 (Chángjiāng Suǒdào)—often labelled Yangtze River Cableway / Chongqing Cableway on English maps. It crosses the Yangtze between the Yuzhong and Nan’an sides.

Where should I buy tickets—and is there an affiliate link?

Buy on-site at the official counters or through the operator’s current official channels only. We do not affiliate cableway tickets: prices and timed-entry rules change, so pay the published official rate on your visit day.

How long are the queues?

Weekday late mornings are usually shorter than Chinese public holidays and weekend afternoons. In peak season, budget 30–90 minutes; reconfirm live wait boards at the station entrance.

Can foreigners pay with Alipay?

Alipay is widely accepted at the official ticket windows when QR payments are enabled. Set up Alipay before you join the queue and keep a card/cash fallback if the terminal rejects a foreign wallet.

Can I combine the cableway with Liziba in one day?

Yes. Many visitors ride the cableway and then take metro/DiDi to Liziba (李子坝) on Line 2—or reverse the order. Leave transfer buffer for Chongqing hills and traffic.
