Hotel guide

Best hotels in central Beijing in 2026

Where to start

Beijing has no single official downtown pin. Here, the centre means Dongcheng’s historic core around the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Chang’an Avenue, and Wangfujing Street, including Jinyu Hutong. Sanlitun, the Guomao CBD, Financial Street, and the Summer Palace area are left out: they are different bases with different travel patterns.

About this list

There is no single official downtown. This guide treats Dongcheng’s historic core around the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Chang’an Avenue, and Wangfujing as walkable and central for a first stay, where walks and the metro are easy. Sanlitun, the Guomao CBD, and the Summer Palace area are different bases and stay outside this list. Use that to pick a base. Ratings on this page are from August 22, 2026 and can change; check the price for your dates.

    1 rank

    Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing

    Wangfujing, Dongcheng

    10/10

    2,348 reviews

Why it works for a central stay

The official site places the hotel on the upper floors of WF CENTRAL at 269 Wangfujing Street and specifically notes Forbidden City views from the terrace. The wellness area has a four-suite spa, a 24-hour guest fitness centre, and a 25-metre skylit pool.

    Highlights

    • Upper floors of WF CENTRAL
    • Terrace views toward the Forbidden City
    • 25-metre swimming pool

    What to consider

The hotel occupies the upper floors of a shopping complex, so arrival is through WF CENTRAL, and palace views depend on the room and vantage point. Book the spa ahead; the 24-hour fitness centre is for in-house guests.

    The Peninsula Beijing

    Jinyu Hutong, Wangfujing

    9.8/10

    1,188 reviews

Why it works for a central stay

The hotel stands on Jinyu Hutong in historic Wangfujing. Official materials document a post-renovation suite-style layout: 230 rooms, standards from 60 square metres with a separate living room, and The Peninsula Spa on the third floor with couple suites and a thermal area.

    Highlights

    • Jinyu Hutong by Wangfujing
    • Suite-style rooms from 60 m²
    • Spa with thermal suites

    What to consider

This block sits off the main Wangfujing pedestrian street, so reaching the shops means crossing the hutong. The spa does not accept guests under 16, and thermal facilities are separated by gender.

    3 rank

    Waldorf Astoria Beijing

    Jinyu Hutong, Wangfujing

    9.8/10

    2,859 reviews

Why it works for a central stay

The official page places the hotel in the heart of Wangfujing at 5–15 Jinyu Hutong and describes two formats: the copper main tower and separate Ming-style siheyuan suites. An indoor pool, fitness centre, and Waldorf Spa are listed on site.

    Highlights

    • Wangfujing, Jinyu Hutong
    • Tower and siheyuan stay
    • Indoor pool and spa

    What to consider

The courtyard villa and private terraces belong to selected categories, not every room. Jinyu Hutong is quieter than the pedestrian street at night, but it is a dense shopping block by day.

    4 rank

    Renaissance Beijing Wangfujing Hotel

    Wangfujing Street, Dongcheng

    9.6/10

    3,545 reviews

Why it works for a central stay

The official site places the hotel at 57 Wangfujing Street and states that selected rooms and the club lounge overlook the Forbidden City. Guests have an indoor pool, whirlpool, and fitness centre; Snack Street and Tiananmen Square are described as close by.

    Highlights

    • Address on Wangfujing Street
    • Palace views in selected rooms
    • Indoor pool and whirlpool

    What to consider

Palace views are stated for many executive rooms and the lounge, not the full room inventory. Wangfujing is crowded by day and evening, and club-lounge access depends on the rate.

    5 rank

    Hilton Beijing Wangfujing

    Wangfujing East Street, Dongcheng

    9.4/10

    4,220 reviews

Why it works for a central stay

Official pages place the hotel at 8 Wangfujing East Street, within walking distance of the pedestrian street and the Forbidden City. They list 255 rooms from 50 square metres, an indoor pool, a spa, and a 24-hour fitness centre.

    Highlights

    • Wangfujing East Street
    • Rooms from 50 m²
    • Indoor pool and spa

    What to consider

The official page still warns of possible daytime noise from service upgrades that began on 8 September 2024. Balcony doors in rooms with balconies do not open.

    6 rank

    Beijing Hotel NUO

    Chang’an Avenue, Dongcheng

    9/10

    1,944 reviews

Why it works for a central stay

The official site places this historic hotel at 33 East Chang’an Avenue, next to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, two minutes from Wangfujing subway exits on Lines 1 and 8. Its 216 rooms mix the heritage building with the 2022 Elite collection.

    Highlights

    • East Chang’an by the palace
    • Historic hotel building
    • Wangfujing metro nearby

    What to consider

The room experience depends on the wing: heritage categories and the 2022 Elite collection are described as separate lines. This is ceremonial Chang’an rather than evening Wangfujing; the Upper East Side NUO Hotel Beijing spa belongs to a different property.

How to choose

Choose Beijing Hotel NUO on Chang’an Avenue for walking access to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. Mandarin Oriental, Renaissance, or Hilton suit a Wangfujing base. Peninsula and Waldorf sit on Jinyu Hutong, one block from the pedestrian street. Forbidden City views depend on room category and orientation. The main trade-offs are Wangfujing crowds, security checks around the square, and a retail-and-office rhythm after dark.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as central Beijing?

There is no single official centre. For this guide it means Dongcheng around the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Chang’an Avenue, and Wangfujing. Sanlitun, the CBD, and Financial Street are outside the selection.

Which hotel is closest to the Forbidden City?

Beijing Hotel NUO sits on East Chang’an Avenue and is officially described as next to the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, about a two-minute walk from Wangfujing subway exits. The exact walking time depends on the entrance and security checks.

Is Wangfujing or Chang’an better for a first visit?

Wangfujing is easier for shops, cafés, and evening walks. Chang’an is closer to the square and palace, but quieter and more formal at night. Reaching the Shichahai hutongs or the Temple of Heaven usually means the metro or a taxi from either base.
