Hunting Banksy: why classic guidebooks go stale
A street mural’s life cycle is short: fresh stencil → viral photos → tourist queues → council paint / wall theft / protective glass. A 2022 guidebook can still send you to a blank brick wall. Queries like “banksy london map” need survival status, not only famous titles.
Disclaimer: attribution and access change. We pin publicly known survivors with nearest Tube stops; the 2024 zoo animals get status notes without a false “still there” guarantee. Save the day in AlpacaBag so you can drop a stop overnight if a wall disappears.
Before you fly, compare flights into London, book hotels near the Tube closer to the East End or City, and set up an eSIM — offline maps and fresh reviews matter when a mural vanishes.
Main surviving murals: addresses, Tube and map
Four classics still worth the journey. Coordinates are embedded in each map; confirm courtyard or pavement access on site.
Shop Until You Drop (Falling Shopper)
Address: Bruton Lane, Mayfair. Tube: Bond Street.
A shopping-trolley figure falling down a Mayfair facade — satire in a luxury district. Far from Shoreditch, but worth a West End detour if you want a near-pristine survivor.
Several storeys up, so it has survived paint-overs and wall theft better than street-level pieces. View from Bruton Lane; photo space is tight.
Very Little Helps
Address: Essex Road, Islington. Tube: Angel / Highbury & Islington.
An Islington classic: consumer critique on a residential street. Easy to pair with Upper Street, but do not force it into the same walking block as Mayfair without the Tube.
Children lifting a Tesco bag sit behind a protective screen. Do not touch the glass or block the pavement for photos.
Graffiti Area / Guard Dog
Address: Rivington Street, Shoreditch (former Cargo courtyard). Tube: Old Street / Shoreditch High Street.
Anchor of a Shoreditch–City walk. Neighbouring walls are full of lesser street art; treat Banksy as a pin, not the only mural.
East London icon behind plexiglass. Courtyard access can change — confirm on site.
Basquiat being welcomed by the Police
Address: Beech Street Tunnel, Barbican Centre. Tube: Barbican.
Best half-day start: Barbican → Rivington Street on foot through East End art streets.
Protected by the City after a Basquiat show. Beech Street is a covered road tunnel — shoot from the pavement, not the carriageway.
2024 London Zoo series: what may still be outdoors
In autumn 2024 Banksy placed animals across London. Some pieces moved to storage or museums quickly; others still appear in local reports as street-visible. Do not build a day around a zoo circuit without a morning check.
- Mountain goat, Kew Green — often cited as one of the more durable outdoor survivors; west of centre on foot-friendly green space.
- Elephants, Chelsea — unstable status in a high-pressure neighbourhood; confirm before leaving central London.
- Pelicans, Walthamstow — north-east; worth it only if you are already heading that way, not as a radial mission for one photo.
- Rhino, Charlton — south-east; longer logistics than the Shoreditch block. If it is in storage, do not spend half a day on a blank wall.
We intentionally skip map embeds for zoo animals: empty-trip risk is higher than for the four screened classics with long public histories.
Painted over or lost — save yourself the journey
Do not travel for these iconic titles as living street works:
- One Nation Under CCTV — long removed from public view; archives only.
- Maid in London (Chalk Farm) — do not expect the original on the wall; walk the area without a mandatory Banksy myth.
- Girl with Balloon on Waterloo Bridge — the original street version is not waiting on the bridge; skip the transfer for the meme.
If museums matter more than wall-hunting, pair a British Museum morning with a separate East End street-art block.
Half-day walking route: Shoreditch and the City
Logistics: start at Barbican (Basquiat & Police in Beech Street Tunnel) → walk east to Rivington Street (Guard Dog / former Cargo courtyard) → loose drift through yards toward Brick Lane / Spitalfields. Keep Mayfair and Islington for another Tube slot or the day unravels.
Coffee and snacks: specialty density around Old Street and Shoreditch High Street — grab a filter after the Barbican tunnel before Rivington fills up. Brick Lane works for a quick street-food reset. Budget travel tips for the wider UK sit in our UK money-saving lifehacks guide.
Prefer not to hunt yards alone? Compare an East London street-art tour — a guide saves access time, but keep the classic pins yourself. Add travel insurance for the full trip.
Ready-made London days: 3 days budget-friendly, 3 days for the first time, 3 days food tour or 3 days for history lovers.
Where to stay for a mural hunt
Shoreditch / City Fringe cut transfers for the half-day block. A West End base helps if Mayfair is the priority. Islington makes sense when Essex Road is the focus, not an afterthought.
Build the day around your pace
AlpacaBag links surviving pins with Tube hops, food and realistic walking time — and lets you drop a wall overnight if it gets painted out.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I find Banksy in London right now?
Start with the four surviving classics below (Mayfair, Islington, Shoreditch, Barbican). The 2024 zoo series is partly in storage or museums — verify before you travel.
Do I need a Banksy London map with addresses?
Yes. Street works disappear, get screened, or get painted out. Save the pins in a trip planner and re-check on the morning of your walk.
How long is the Shoreditch and City walk?
A half day covers Barbican plus Rivington Street and nearby yards if you do not also force Mayfair and Islington into the same block without the Tube.
Should I go to Waterloo Bridge for Girl with Balloon?
Not for the original street piece — it is long gone from public display. Chase gallery editions if you want the motif, not the bridge.
